DOCUMENTARY FAMILY PHOTOGRAPHER | BELLINGHAM, WA
Why documentary family photography?
Because it reveals all the feels of family life.
What is documentary family photography?
Documentary family photography is a wonderfully uncomplicated, stress-free approach to photographing your family in your home and community. It’s you, me, and a camera. Just hanging out. There’s no need to subtract time from your already busy schedule. There’s no need to coordinate outfits, contort yourself into an uncomfortable pose, or conjure up an artificial smile. A personal favorite: there’s no need to clean house! Unless that’s your thing. More importantly, there’s no need to be anyone other than your genuine self. You be you. Do what you normally do throughout the course of your day and I’ll capture the organic, un-orchestrated moments that make your life uniquely yours.
Who is documentary family photography for?
Parents who want to feel the warmth of this moment in their family’s life years from now, after the frenzied pace of parenthood subsides and the house slowly empties.
Your kiddos, whose relationship with you will naturally shift as they grow older - and whose memories of childhood will fade with time.
Anyone who prioritizes authenticity over the performative nature of a conventional portrait or lifestyle session.
Anyone who wants family photos taken without the stress and hassle associated with traditional sessions. You know. Juggling schedules to fit a session in. Deciding on a location. Coordinating outfits. Deflecting protests and twisting arms the moment you mention, “We’re getting a family portrait taken.”
For everyone. Yes! For anyone and everyone. For chosen and traditional families. People of every beautiful skin tone. Every neuro-type. Every gender and expression. Truly, for anyone and everyone.
“Rob is a wonderful photographer! As a dad, I’ll admit I was kind of dreading the typical family photo shoot, but this experience with Rob was completely different and genuinely enjoyable. On the day of the shoot, Rob just hung out with us and captured the real, unscripted moments of our family life. I have really enjoyed looking back at these photos and being able to reimagine those everyday moments Rob so beautifully captured. We ended up with amazing, meaningful photos we never could’ve staged. Highly recommend Rob, especially for parents with little extra time in their lives to schedule something else.”

This sounds dope, Rob! Tell me more.

If you’ve got kiddos, you know: parenting is heart-work. We welcome our children into our lives and spend decades in service to them. Bearing witness to this, to the devotion parents show their kiddos and the tender connections made as the result of a nurturing presence is one of the more rewarding perks of my job. The other is simply kids being kids. Kids exploring their environment and learning to navigate it. Kids having big feels and making them known to the world without awareness of or care for social conventions. Kids growing into themselves - discovering who they are as individuals. I photograph both candid portraits of children and family sessions. I’m available for life’s big events, the everyday routines, and all things in-between. But these are the motifs that I’m naturally drawn to. Your heart-work. Their state of simply being. And the bonds formed between them and you. If this is what you’re looking for in a family photographer, I’d enjoy hearing from you.
So how does this work?
I’m available for life’s big events, the everyday routines, and all things in-between. You get to decide on the who, what, where, and when. Once you’ve done that, reach out.
Once I’ve received a message from you, I’ll be in touch to answer any questions you might have. We’ll set a date for your session, and I’ll send a contract for you to sign, as well as a session prep guide and a questionnaire. We’ll maintain communication as needed until the day of your session.
On the day of your session, I’ll arrive at the destination of your choice with my camera, ready to hang out and photograph whatever the day in your family’s life brings.
Within two weeks of your session, you’ll receive a gallery of curated images and an option to invest in prints or photo albums, as well as a brief follow-up questionnaire.
Fantastic! But what do you offer?
Documentary family photography presents you with an opportunity to have your family’s culture artfully photographed. And the longer we have together, the more opportunity we have to tell a broader story of family’s unique experience. Of who y’all are. In this moment. Time reveals your rhythms and interactions and room is made for kiddos’ distinct personalities to emerge. The heartwork of parenthood begins to make its way into your final images. That said, not everyone can commit to a full day. If you’re trying to decide which session is right for you consider the following:
Short Session
A short session is meant to provide you with a handful of cherished memories, possibly planned around a few activities with your kiddos: a tea party, a trip to the beach, etc. Alternatively, they might just be focused solely on your kiddos. It might look like documentary-style portraiture or coverage of an event they’re involved in.
Half-day Session
Half-day sessions are good for parents who want a fuller story told but cannot commit to a full day. Other considerations include number of kiddos, their age, or their energy level. For example, if you’ve got one toddler who naps for a few hours in the afternoon; a homebody whose idea of a good time is curling up with a book for the better part of a morning; or an older child competing in a pump-track race, you might consider a half day-session.
Full-day Session
A full-day session tells a broader, more intimate visual story — one that captures the details and rhythms of a day beautifully lived. It begins the moment your kiddos rise sleepy-eyed from bed and ends the moment lights go out at bedtime.

Bring it! I’ve been a stay-at-home dad for ten years and a homeschool teacher. Before that I worked with kiddos in a number of settings - in classrooms, childcare settings, and shelters. So yeah, I’m up for it!

I’m an autistic individual with ADHD. For me that means that I have energy and focus in spades when a camera is in hand, because photography is a special interest that feeds my otherwise dopamine-starved brain. I also derive energy from people with good hearts who care for their loved ones, so working with nurturing families is simply delightful and incredibly fulfilling. A nurturing, supportive environment fills me with a profound sense of warmth that regularly reveals itself in quiet smiles given generously throughout the course of a session. In fact, I tend to smile more than I engage in conversation during a session because I want to minimize my influence in an environment. I’ll chat with your kiddos to build rapport, get in close with my camera to create images with emotional impact, and climb on furniture or lie on the floor if needs be to create an image, but I won’t extrovert too much. I’ve been told that I’m a quiet, calm presence. I like to think that places you and your family precisely where it needs to during a session: at the center of your story.
-
I deeply appreciate a genuine moment - an unscripted and unposed moment. None of the photos posted on my site were posed. None were guided. I can usually create a card-worthy photo without directing anyone. That said, we can make a lightly posed moment or two with minimal direction happen if you wish.

If you allow me to, yes! But I’ll certainly honor your right to privacy if you choose otherwise. Posting client photos online does a few important things in my mind. It makes the heart-work of parenthood known, revealing its value in a society that isn’t always supportive of parents. With its focus on authenticity, documentary family photographs stand against the perfectly curated social media feed and gives a more truthful representation of what it means to be a family. Related to that, it broadens the definition of family at a time when institutions are pushing back against expressed identities. Finally, and not nearly important as the previous points, it helps me advertise myself as a service provider. The more people see my work, the more opportunity I have to provide my photographic service. But as I said, the decision is yours. If you allow me to, that would be fantastic. If not, respect.
-
I prioritize my client’s personal feelings of emotional safety and their right to set boundaries over photographic opportunity when working with them. Your body is yours to advocate and set boundaries for. You say what gets photographed and what doesn’t. I honor it. Full stop. Some mothers who breastfeed want to be photographed. Others don’t. Similarly, some parents want potty training or bathing documented. Others don’t. The most important part of my job is to listen and to photograph only what you want incorporated into your story. Prior to and on the day of your session I’ll regularly check in with you to determine what your boundaries and comfort levels are. Likewise, if you allow me to post photos from our session together online, we’ll have a discussion around boundaries: what can or cannot be posted.
-
I use the natural/ambient light in your environment so there’s no need to concern yourself with flash photography. In the event that you have a specific activity or location in mind that might require external light sources, I’ll talk with you before hand.

I’m in the start-up stage of my photography business, which means you get a great deal as long as you contact me sooner rather than later!
